Blog - The Writer's Life

Tomorrow is the two-year anniversary of this blog. I started it as an way to say things that were important to me (with the hope that, one day, one of those things would be "hey, I have a book!", I'll admit). Since then I've written 277 posts (278 including this one). Google analytics tells me I have a reasonable stream of readers every month, though I've no idea how many read through RSS (the feedburner counter never worked properly, and I stopped trying to fix it.). Funnily enough, people are far more likely to email me about something I've written here than actually comment, but I guess that's group psychology for you. We all whisper in quiet rooms.

I have people reading this from countries I really didn't expect. Oddly, the UK readers actually outweigh the Australian ones, and the US isn't far behind along with Canada. But there's also Brazil, Ukraine, Estonia, Malaysia, India, and China (hi, bro!) amongst others. I'm surprised you're here, guys, but you're very welcome.

More random oddness, since I just went trawling through my analytics page to see if there was anything else interesting to report - almost half of my readers use Chrome, which surprises me. After Chrome, it's Safafi, closely followed by Firefox, with Internet Explorer a close tie with Opera for fourth and fifth. The overwhelming majority of readers run Windows; Mac takes up about a quarter, with a tiny bite reserved for 'nix and people trying to read this on their mobile (seriously people, what?).

I don't think I can do anything much with most of that data. It's just a curiosity, really. But  I have been looking at the trends and comments to narrow down what posts people found interesting or useful. The 'How Not To Write A Novel' series is still a clear favourite, as are the posts about worldbuilding, and the worldbuilding experiment. I'm planning to build on that more in 2012, plus introduce another couple of blog-series-ideas that have ambled up to me over the past few months.

I'll be taking a break over the weeks of christmas and the new year. Thank you all for reading, and have a safe and happy holiday season. Even if it isn't one where you happen to be reading from.
